Description

Session is a privacy-focused messaging application that routes communications through an onion-routing network to reduce metadata exposure and enable anonymous chat without requiring a phone number.

Session is an open-source, end-to-end encrypted messaging application designed to minimize the collection and leakage of user metadata. Instead of relying on centralized servers that can associate accounts with identifiers such as phone numbers, Session uses account creation based on cryptographic keys and routes messages through a decentralized onion-routing network (built on the Lokinet/Service Node infrastructure) to obscure users’ IP addresses and message routing information. The application supports one-to-one conversations and group chats, with features such as message requests, blocking, and configurable disappearing messages. By decoupling identity from telephone numbers and using multi-hop routing, Session aims to provide communication that is resilient against surveillance and correlation attacks, though usability and performance can vary compared to conventional centralized messengers due to the overhead of anonymous routing.

Session is distributed for multiple platforms, including Windows, and its source code is publicly available.
