Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure game played from either a third-person or first-person perspective.
It is set within the fictional state of San Andreas, which is based on Southern California. The single-player story follows three protagonists—retired bank robber Michael De Santa, street gangster Franklin Clinton, and drug dealer and arms smuggler Trevor Philips—and their attempts to commit heists while under pressure from a corrupt government agency and powerful criminals. The open-world design lets players freely roam San Andreas's open countryside and the fictional city of Los Santos, based on Los Angeles. The game features a large open world that players can navigate on foot or by vehicle. Players complete missions—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story. Outside of missions, players can freely roam the open world. The game's narrative shifts between the three protagonists, allowing players to switch between them at almost any time outside of missions. Combat involves firearms and melee attacks, and a cover system aids in shootouts. Vehicles like cars, motorcycles, planes, and boats are essential for traversal. Grand Theft Auto V also includes Grand Theft Auto Online, a persistent online multiplayer mode. This mode allows up to 30 players to explore the open world together and participate in cooperative and competitive gameplay. Players can engage in various activities, including races, deathmatches, and elaborate heists.
