7-Zip is a free and open-source file archiving utility for Microsoft Windows that provides tools to create, extract, and manage compressed archive files. It uses its own 7z archive format, which supports high compression ratios and features such as solid compression, strong AES-256 encryption, and support for large files and long paths. The program can also read and extract many common archive formats (including ZIP, RAR, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ, ISO, and others) and can create archives in several formats (notably 7z and ZIP). 7-Zip integrates with Windows Explorer via a context-menu extension, supports command-line operation for scripting and automation, and offers a graphical user interface for interactive use.
It is widely used as a general-purpose compression and extraction tool and is distributed under the GNU LGPL with some components under other compatible open-source licenses.
